Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery can help combat the signs of aging and can reshape parts of the body that may be of concern to patients. Most areas of the body, including the face, can be treated with cosmetic surgery.

Not all procedures referred to as “cosmetic surgery” require undergoing an operation. Cosmetic surgeons typically offer a number of nonsurgical procedures as well. While the results of these procedures are not usually as dramatic as those associated with surgical procedures, recovery times are often drastically reduced. Many patients opt for these procedures in order to achieve subtle but significant improvement without having to spend much time away from work or social engagements.

Good candidates for cosmetic surgery include people who are in good overall health and have reasonable expectations for their surgical outcome.

Cosmetic surgery procedures?
Cosmetic surgeons offer patients a wide range of procedures from which to choose. Sometimes a person who is not a good candidate for one procedure may be able to choose an alternative treatment method.

The following lists highlight some of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures :
1. Breast Augmentation—uses a saline implant to increase the size of a woman’s breasts; can  also balance unevenly sized breasts.
2. Liposuction—used to remove isolated pockets of fat from specific areas of the body (such as the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, or upper arms); not intended for overall weight loss.
3. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)—removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen, tightens underlying muscles; a mini tummy tuck can be done on just the lower abdomen if desired.
4. Facelift—removes excess facial skin and tightens underlying muscles for a smoother, younger facial appearance; can also be combined with a neck lift to remove loose skin from the neck and jowls.
5. Brow lift—trims excess skin from the forehead, raising the eyebrows and removing wrinkles.
6. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)—can be performed on upper and/or lower eyelids to remove excess fat, skin, and tissue; makes tired eyes appear brighter; removes bags and folds.
7. Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping)—can increase or decrease the size of the nose or reshape the bridge, tip, or nostrils; can be used to straighten a broken or crooked nose; can also be done to improve breathing.
8. Otoplasty (ear pinning)—reduces the size of large ears or moves protruding ears closer to the head; often performed on children between the ages of 5 and 14, although it can also be done on adults.

Nonsurgical Procedures :
1. Botox—injections of a purified protein toxin paralyze the muscles surrounding wrinkles, allowing the skin to relax and wrinkles to fade; used on the forehead or around the eyes or mouth; lasts about 3 months.
2. Collagen—injections of collagen, a naturally occurring protein in the skin, can help fill in lines and scars, making skin look smoother; lasts about 6 months.
3. Laser skin resurfacing—can improve skin’s texture, removing lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and areas of uneven pigmentation; uses a specific wavelength of light to remove the outermost layer of skin.
4. Chemical Peel—can make skin smoother and younger-looking; comes in various strengths; can remove wrinkles, acne scars, and discoloration.
5. Hair Replacement—several techniques exist to combat baldness, including hair transplantation and flap surgery.
6. Hair Removal—uses a laser to remove hair from areas of the body where it is unwanted (e.g. the legs for women or the back for men).

Browlift Surgery in India

Brow lifts are performed for people who have ptosis of the forehead or brows as well as those with drooping of the upper eyelids. A brow lift is a procedure that will restore the aged area over the eyes. Brow lifts correct drooping brows and improves the horizontal lines and furrows that make someone appear angry, sad, or tired. During a brow lift the surgeon removes the muscles and tissues that cause the drooping. The eyebrows are raised, and the result of a brow lift is a smoother looking forehead.

The brow lift surgeon makes an incision that is hidden behind the hairline sometimes with an endoscope, a viewing instrument that allows brow lift to be done with minimal incisions. Brow lifts are normally performed on people ages 40-60 when signs of aging become more visible, but a brow lift can also be performed to decrease frown lines that have developed from stress or muscle activity. Some people seek a brow lift because they were born with a low or heavy brow and want to achieve a more alert and refreshed look. Sometimes a brow lift is accompanied by a facelift to provide a smoother look to the face, or with eyelid surgery if there is a significant amount of skin overhang in the upper eyelids.

An incision behind the hairline allows the brow lift surgeon to avoid permanent visible scarring as a result of the brow lift. The surgeon then removes the necessary tissue, sometimes using an endoscope (small camera) to avoid brow lift scarring. Aside from scarring, there are a few other side effects that could result from brow lift surgery. As with any surgery, infection is always a risk, and nerve damage from brow lifts can cause an inability of the individual to control eyebrow movement or wrinkle the forehead. Brow lift complications, however, are extremely rare, and most often can be corrected surgically.

The procedure can also address horizontal lines across the forehead, as well as glabellar creases or wrinkles across root of the nose. In these patients, the brow is lifted as well as interrupting the muscle activity that causes these lines and wrinkles. Endoscopic approaches have become popular in recent years, specifically addressing these overactive muscles in the forehead. The standard approach remains the coronal lift, in which an incision is made across the top of the head, from ear to ear, and the forehead, brows, and upper lids. The procedure can be done in conjunction with a facelift, in which case the incisions are connected in the hairline.

Complications with brow lifts are rare. A rare risk that may result from a brow lift is injured nerves that control eyebrow movement that may prevent the ability to raise the eyebrows or wrinkle the forehead. This brow lift problem can be corrected with additional surgery. A broad scar can also result from a brow lift and can be treated surgically by removing the scar tissue. Minor Complications like hematoma, alopecia, paralysis of the frontalis muscle or nerve branches, and interruption of sensation of the forehead and anterior scalp. The endoscopic approach can minimize or eliminate some of these potential risks.

Robotic Arm Knee Replacement Surgery Breakthrough

A major breakthrough for knee replacement surgery has recently been announced that could dramatically change the way surgical procedures are performed in the near future. The technology that I speak of is a robotic arm that has been labelled a “game changer”.

If the robotic arm is rolled out across clinics and hospitals around the world, knee replacement surgery will no longer be a major operation that requires months of agonizing physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Instead, the robotic technology assists surgeons, performing knee replacement surgery, by allowing for superior accuracy and precise placement.

How Will The Patients Be Affected?

Amazingly, of the robotically-assisted knee replacements that have been performed so far, some patients have been back on their feet and almost pain-free the day after their surgery. One patient spoke of how his knee grew so painful he could barely manage to get out of bed. So, after already suffering one knee replacement and the intense rehab that followed, he was scheduled for another knee replacement but this time, it was to be robotically-assisted. The results were amazing and he was back on his feet and playing golf just two days after surgery.

    How Does It Work?

Before a patient goes into surgery, a 3D model of the knee joint is taken using a CAT scan to use with the robotic arm, which is then controlled and guided around the joint by the surgeon. This allows the surgeon to resurface the damaged sections with metal and plastic whilst preserving as much of the healthy bone and tissue as possible; something that would be impossible for human hands alone.

    What Are The Benefits?

Patients undergoing this type of surgery will not have to suffer from the traumas associated with traditional knee surgery. This includes:
    1. Having a rod driven into the bone to serve as an anchor
    2. The risk of dangerous emboli forming due to tissue and bone damage
    3. Several weeks to months of physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
