Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery can help combat the signs of aging and can reshape parts of the body that may be of concern to patients. Most areas of the body, including the face, can be treated with cosmetic surgery.

Not all procedures referred to as “cosmetic surgery” require undergoing an operation. Cosmetic surgeons typically offer a number of nonsurgical procedures as well. While the results of these procedures are not usually as dramatic as those associated with surgical procedures, recovery times are often drastically reduced. Many patients opt for these procedures in order to achieve subtle but significant improvement without having to spend much time away from work or social engagements.

Good candidates for cosmetic surgery include people who are in good overall health and have reasonable expectations for their surgical outcome.

Cosmetic surgery procedures?
Cosmetic surgeons offer patients a wide range of procedures from which to choose. Sometimes a person who is not a good candidate for one procedure may be able to choose an alternative treatment method.

The following lists highlight some of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures :
1. Breast Augmentation—uses a saline implant to increase the size of a woman’s breasts; can  also balance unevenly sized breasts.
2. Liposuction—used to remove isolated pockets of fat from specific areas of the body (such as the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, or upper arms); not intended for overall weight loss.
3. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)—removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen, tightens underlying muscles; a mini tummy tuck can be done on just the lower abdomen if desired.
4. Facelift—removes excess facial skin and tightens underlying muscles for a smoother, younger facial appearance; can also be combined with a neck lift to remove loose skin from the neck and jowls.
5. Brow lift—trims excess skin from the forehead, raising the eyebrows and removing wrinkles.
6. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)—can be performed on upper and/or lower eyelids to remove excess fat, skin, and tissue; makes tired eyes appear brighter; removes bags and folds.
7. Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping)—can increase or decrease the size of the nose or reshape the bridge, tip, or nostrils; can be used to straighten a broken or crooked nose; can also be done to improve breathing.
8. Otoplasty (ear pinning)—reduces the size of large ears or moves protruding ears closer to the head; often performed on children between the ages of 5 and 14, although it can also be done on adults.

Nonsurgical Procedures :
1. Botox—injections of a purified protein toxin paralyze the muscles surrounding wrinkles, allowing the skin to relax and wrinkles to fade; used on the forehead or around the eyes or mouth; lasts about 3 months.
2. Collagen—injections of collagen, a naturally occurring protein in the skin, can help fill in lines and scars, making skin look smoother; lasts about 6 months.
3. Laser skin resurfacing—can improve skin’s texture, removing lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and areas of uneven pigmentation; uses a specific wavelength of light to remove the outermost layer of skin.
4. Chemical Peel—can make skin smoother and younger-looking; comes in various strengths; can remove wrinkles, acne scars, and discoloration.
5. Hair Replacement—several techniques exist to combat baldness, including hair transplantation and flap surgery.
6. Hair Removal—uses a laser to remove hair from areas of the body where it is unwanted (e.g. the legs for women or the back for men).
